CASE STUDY

Injection Moulded Battery Pack Case

Client:

18650 UK Ltd (Wholesaler & retailer of batteries)

Location:

Surrey

Context:

Amey Plastics was approached by 18650 Batteries to redesign their current battery case; which is used to protect the batteries that they send to both retail and end users.

The lid of the old case was difficult to attach, leading to multiple reworking processes. On top of this, 18650 were purchasing these items from China and wanted to secure their supply chain going forward, following recent disruption as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. In addition, they were keen to reduce their warehousing costs. Their solution to these challenges was to look for a UK supplier.

Following extensive meetings, Amey Plastics offered several design alternatives, all of which resolved the previous issue of the troublesome lid.  18650 selected their preference and Amey provided the customer with a 3D-printed sample of the selected design for final product verification prior to tooling manufacture. This was approved and the green light was given to progress with the moulding.

The customer was impressed with the first iteration of samples provided and approved the product for production on the same day. A purchase order was received for 100,000 units and the customer has now received their first delivery.

Testimonial:

"18650.uk are a UK based distributor of lithium ion batteries to both the trade and public. In early 2018 we developed an innovative “retail ready” solution to enable the compliant and safe sale of our products to the general public. Part of this solution was a plastic tube that can be used to store the cells in isolation and be reused for years.

Historically we sourced the tubes from China, however rising freight charges, difficulty in demand projection and local storage limitations resulted in the search for a UK based manufacture. We luckily found Amey Plastics.

Lee and the team have been outstanding! From the initial site visit, 3D printed prototype and suggesting revisions to the design. We could not be happier with the service received. The improvements to the design have resulted in a better customer experience. Having the tubes manufactured domestically means we never run out and every member of staff I have met has been happy and helpful. I would not hesitate to recommend Amey for any injection moulding requirement." - Oliver Osborne (Director)
